FAQ for Disciplinary Holds

Overdue Meeting Requests

  • All students are provided a request via their student email account to set up an appointment within one week (five business days) of the letter being sent.
  • After that deadline passes, if there is no response, a disciplinary hold is placed until such time as the student schedules and attends an appointment with the case coordinator.
  • If a student schedules, but fails to attend the appointment, a disciplinary hold is applied after the appointment is missed.
  • If a student calls to reschedule multiple times but fails to meet, a disciplinary hold application will be applied on a case-by-case basis.

Overdue Sanction Deadlines

  • If a student fails to complete an educational sanction by the predetermined deadline, a disciplinary hold is applied until the sanction is completed.
  • If a student requests a reasonable extension on a sanction deadline before the deadline passes, the case coordinator will evaluate and likely extend the deadline one time. Multiple extension requests are not considered.
  • If a student requests a reasonable extension on a sanction deadline after the deadline passes, the case coordinator will evaluate and likely apply the hold until such time that the sanction is complete.

Disciplinary Hold Release Requests

  • If a student has a disciplinary hold for an overdue meeting and is in critical need to add or drop a class, the hold will not be lifted until the student attends a meeting with a member of the OSCR staff.
  • If a student has a disciplinary hold for an overdue sanction and is in critical need to add or drop a class, a one-time 48-hour release may be permitted to make the appropriate changes. At the end of the 48-hour period, the hold is restored until the sanction is complete. There is no opportunity to request a 2nd emergency hold release.

Disciplinary Hold Release Requests – Dismissal Status

  • When a person is dismissed from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a hold is placed on their record until such time that they successfully petition before the appropriate Subcommittee and are approved. The hold covers all three University of Illinois campuses.
  • If a student is permitted to attend either the Chicago or Springfield University of Illinois campus’ during their dismissal period, the student can request a 72 hour hold release to coordinate their registration for classes in each semester they are dismissed up until the time they are eligible to petition to return to the Urbana-Champaign campus.
  • Once a student is eligible to petition to the appropriate Subcommittee of the Urbana-Champaign campus, a student is no longer eligible to request for a disciplinary hold release, regardless of which campus they are continuing their education.
